BET Reinforcing Sterotypes?

Last Friday while i was having dinner at my house with a couple of my close friends i ran across one of BET new show " Pay It Off." immediately the name of the program raises red flags in my head, but I decided to give the show a chance before i knocked it, just in case my hunches were wrong. Come to find out the purpose of the show was to help there contestant (who are all Black) pay off their debts. BET is reinforcing stereotypes that the average Black individual is not capable of being financially stable and they purchase items they are unable to pay for. Which i feel is untrue and unfair to make that assumption. That is not even the worst part!

The show is very degrading in my book, the question that are being asked were so dumb and easy, it was like they were sending subliminal to their viewer that Black people are dumb so we wont ask them educated questions. I remember one of the questions on the show was: how many digits are in your social security number? honestly my 9 year old nephew could have answer that question correctly. An observation that I made from the show was that they used very few words and plenty of pictures, its almost they saying we are unable to comprehend information so they will draw it out for us.

I honestly felt disrespected and the worst part of the show was not the show it self it was the fact that BET aired it. BET is the media outlet we look at to put out positive images of Blacks succeeding. We look at BET to help us in the fight against stereotypes and equality with in opportunities but they turn around and air this garbage. I guess they lost one viewer, bu then again the lost me when they got rid of AJ and Free.
